Kind-hearted Walmart Cashier Pays Off Needy Woman’s Grocery Bill

The Bible talks about giving generously to the poor and also about speaking up on their behalf, Proverbs 11:25 says, “A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.”

This Walmart cashier was living the Bible when he saw a woman cry when she could not pay for her grocery bill, and then he cleared off the bill by paying for it from his own pocket.

John Lopez, 19, of Princeton, Texas, was working as a cashier at the local Walmart on Dec. 17, when he saw a lady break down in tears on seeing her total bill was US$110.

Lopez says, “She started crying and I was like, ‘OK, I got you – I got you,’” and added, “I just felt in my heart that the Lord told me I had to help her.”

Laci Simms who stood behind the woman in line, captured the whole scene of how Lopez helped her, and posted it on Facebook.

The post read, “I just witnessed this ‘kid’ pay for a cart of merchandise for a woman in obvious distress about her inability to pay. She was a few people ahead of us and when she had trouble paying her bill he stepped in and told her if she’d wait he would pay her total.” The post has got more than 80,000 likes and nearly 4,000 shares since posting of this article.

Lopez said that his parents had taught him to help others and that is why he helped the needy woman. “My parents basically taught me if someone needs help, you should be able to help them and if someone is down, bring them up,” said Lopez. He added, “I make it my goal to at least in one way make someone smile.”

A GoFundMe page had been set up for Lopez by a local resident Weddle to help pay for his college fees and has been able to raise more than $35,500 of its $50,000 goal. He has also organized an event to thank Lopez, and among those who attended was Princeton Mayor John-Mark Caldwell who gave Lopez “a certificate, and the Police Chief James Waters presented him with a medallion.
