The Benn Family Band performed Lauren Daigle’s ‘Rescue’ on America’s Got Talent after losing their home in the Eaton Fire in Altadena, California.
The family used their performance to honor their hometown and the people who lost everything in the January fire.
Did you know it’s in our trials that we truly learn how deeply rooted we are in our faith? In the Bible, we see how Job’s faith was tested. He lost his family, his health, and his wealth, but he kept trusting God.
The Benn family faced their own test when fire took their home and community, and they chose to sing about God’s rescue instead of giving up.
The Fire Changed Everything
The family comes from Altadena, California, just a few miles from the America’s Got Talent studio. In January, the Eaton Fire swept through their community and destroyed thousands of homes including theirs.
One family member described that terrible day: “That day seeing fires right outside my own home I just panicked and got right into survival mode. I didn’t know that a few hours later the whole city would be gone.”
The fire took more than just their house. The family explained that Altadena was their family’s legacy.
“We come from a very big and beautiful family a lineage of people that live in Altadena and our legacy was the homes that we owned and that beautiful community,” they said.
The fire took away their friends, relatives, and neighbors along with their homes.
Five family members performed on stage while two other siblings and their parents watched from the audience along with grandchildren.
The family chose to perform ‘Rescue’ by Lauren Daigle as their way of honoring Altadena. “We love our city and we love the people in our city we loved our neighborhood and this is a salute to Altadena and this is our love song to you,” they explained before their performance.
Their Powerful Performance Moved Everyone
Their performance began with each person singing alone. Their voices carried deep emotion that immediately touched hearts. The song lyrics matched their experience perfectly.
When they reached the chorus, all five voices joined together in beautiful harmonies that gave the audience chills.
Their heartfelt performance moved everyone in the theater. The judges and audience gave them a standing ovation when they finished singing.
Judges’ Response
Judge Howie Mandel spoke first about their performance. “Wow wow the choice of song the emotion that it was delivered in is one of the most beautiful heartfelt incredibly emotional messages I think we’ve heard on this season thank you,” he said.
Simon Cowell called their performance brave and important. “I think that was a very brave and important thing you just did very very emotional hearing that lyric of the song and all the memories that go with that fire,” he said.
He also talked about how the media focused on celebrities who lost homes instead of regular families.
“The important thing actually was the regular people with regular jobs who lost their homes and their businesses. This story has to keep being talked about. I’m really sorry for what you went through, and I’m also grateful that you came here to share your message. You did a great job.”
All four judges voted yes to send the Benn Family Band to the next round.
The family said that their appearance on the show was about more than winning a competition. They wanted to use this platform to remember their community and the people who suffered loss.
Let’s pray for the Benn family and everyone still recovering from the California fires. May God continue to provide for their needs and use their testimony to encourage others.
