American Idol Contestant Sings Moving ‘Go Rest High on That Mountain’ to Honor Late Grandfather

A stay-at-home mom from Missouri moved the entire American Idol stage to tears during the Ohana Round in Hawaii when she sang Vince Gill’s ‘Go Rest High on That Mountain’ as a tribute to her late grandfather.

God has a way of using music to carry what words alone cannot hold. A song offered in love and grief can reach places in the human heart that nothing else can touch. That is exactly what Hannah Harper showed the world on American Idol.

Harper, already a fan favorite after her viral audition of her original song ‘String Cheese,’ stepped onto the stage at Disney’s Aulani Resort & Spa knowing the stakes were high.

The Top 30 Ohana Round was unlike any other — three separate groups voted on who would receive a coveted Platinum Ticket: the judges, a panel of industry experts that included the editor of Rolling Stone, and each contestant’s own family. Harper admitted feeling the pressure.

But when Harper opened her mouth to sing, the nerves gave way to something deeper. She chose Vince Gill’s 1994 classic because it was her late grandfather Pawpaw Lew’s favorite song.

Pawpaw Lew was a musician and family patriarch who played music until the day he died. In a 1992 interview about their family band, he had said, “Bluegrass and gospel, that will keep us together.”

Harper carried those words with her on stage. “The legacy that he left was such a strong impression on my life,” she shared. “I want to do the same for my kids.”

Her grandmother Barbara sat in the audience and wept. The judges gave her a standing ovation.

Luke Bryan compared her voice to Dolly Parton, saying, “It’s just so beautifully country. You’ve got the goods.” Lionel Richie called it “that straight, authentic mountain voice.”

Harper did not earn a Platinum Ticket, but she secured her place in the Top 20.

Harper didn’t just inherit her grandfather’s musical talent. She inherited his faith. Pawpaw Lew believed bluegrass and gospel would keep the family together. He was right.

And now Harper is doing the same thing — standing on a national stage, carrying that faith with her.

We can leave our children many things. But the most valuable thing we can pass on is not wealth or talent. It’s faith. That’s the kind of legacy that never fades.
