A group of young boys in Akron, Ohio, ran straight to their local church with a powerful request after they found something frightening in their neighborhood.
How many times have we tried to solve things on our own and only turned to prayer when nothing else worked? For many of us, prayer becomes a last resort rather than a first response. But God never meant to be our backup plan. He is meant to be our first call, our first thought, and our first step.
Choosing prayer over everything else is a mark of real spiritual maturity. We might think that kind of faith only comes with age and years of walking with God. But that is simply not true.
It is our choices, not our age, that shape how strong our faith grows. And these two young boys proved that in the most beautiful way.
Kayden Moreland and Dayvionte Salaam were out exploring their neighborhood when they came across a pentagram and a suspicious figure nearby.
Salaam said it felt like something was on him — like he was cursed.
Without hesitation, the boys headed straight to Equip Church on 825 E. Buchtel Avenue and rang the doorbell of Pastor Crystal Varner.
“It felt like the safest place to ask for God,” Moreland said.
Pastor Varner had never seen anything like it. “I haven’t seen a child or children, a group of young men, run into a church at all, let alone asking for prayer in a sense of urgency,” she said.
Varner prayed over the boys right there at the door — covering them from head to foot in Jesus’ name. When they rode off on their bikes, one boy called back, “That’s why I love pastor.” She told them to come back the next day. They did.
Evangelist Ciera Walker shared the Ring camera footage online. It quickly reached over 16 million views. “It just shows you how vital prayer is and how much it’s missing in this world,” Walker said.
These precious kids reminded us that prayer is the most powerful weapon we have against everything dark and evil in this world. It does not matter how old you are or how long you have walked with God. Our first resort should always be prayer.
Moreover we should practice prayer as a lifestyle that we cannot skip any single day. The necessity of prayer is greater now than it has ever been.
So just as Jesus urged His disciples to watch and pray because of what is coming, we too must not let our prayer lives grow cold. Without prayer, we cannot stand against what we face each day.
Let these boys be a reminder to all of us to run to God first, every single time.
