Chris and Stephanie make music together and publish on their YouTube channel Out of the Dust. They recently posted an acoustic version of ‘What a Friend We Have in Jesus.’

Joseph Scriven wrote What a Friend We Have in Jesus in 1855. He created this hymn during a difficult time in his life.

Scriven was living in Canada while his mother was sick in Ireland. He couldn’t travel to be with her, so he wrote these words as a letter to comfort her.

Scriven had already gone through two tragedies when he lost his fiancée—twice. He was first engaged in Ireland. But just before the wedding, his fiancée drowned in an accident.

Heartbroken, he later moved to Canada for a fresh start. Years later, he fell in love again and got engaged. But before they could marry, his second fiancée became very sick and died from an illness.

Through all this pain, Scriven leaned on his faith. He found comfort in Jesus and shared that same comfort with others through his words.

Charles Converse added the music we know today in 1868. Scriven never planned for anyone else to see his poem. A friend found it among his papers years later when Scriven was sick.

The hymn teaches us that Jesus wants to carry our worries and pain. Each verse reminds us that prayer connects us directly to our heavenly Friend. He never gets tired of hearing about our problems.

The song reminds us that we have a Friend who knows everything about us and still loves us completely.

Their simple acoustic style lets the message shine clearly. “We pray this acoustic version will bring comfort to your soul and gently point you back to the Friend who knows your every weakness and yet will never leave you,” they write.

When life feels too hard, remember—you don’t have to carry it all on your own.

Jesus sees what you’re going through, and He wants to help. He’s your Friend, and He’ll never leave you.

Talk to Him today and let Him carry the weight with you.

Verse of the Day

“Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.””

Revelation 21: 2-4
