Carrie Underwood Turns American Idol Into Church with Breathtaking Rendition of ‘How Great Thou Art’

Carrie Underwood brought us to church with her powerful performance of ‘How Great Thou Art’ on American Idol with three Platinum Ticket winners during Songs of Faith night.

The performance drew from her GRAMMY Award-winning gospel album ‘My Savior,’ released in 2021. She wasn’t alone up there. Canaan James Hill, Filo, and Kolbi Jordan, all Platinum Ticket winners joined her on stage.

It started with just Underwood’s voice, and that alone was enough to pull the audience into worship. Then the others came in, and the whole thing lifted. The American Idol stage became, genuinely, a place of worship.

‘How Great Thou Art’ was written by Swedish poet Carl Boberg in 1885 and later translated into English by Stuart K. Hine. It isn’t just a song. It’s a declaration of who God is, from the wonder of creation to the depth of His mercy on the cross.

Every single one of those singers poured everything they had into that hymn. It was quickly clear why these three were chosen.

All three held their own alongside a country superstar, and gave glory to God on a platform where we often hear secular songs. Then Underwood hit that final high note, and honestly, chills. Just chills.

It’s something special when a national TV program stops and makes room for faith like that. We needed it more than we probably realized.

God doesn’t wait for a church building or the right moment. He just moves. And Sunday night, He moved on an American Idol stage. We are grateful.

Verse of the Day

“[Folly of the Godless, and God’s Final Triumph] To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David. The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, They have done abominable works, There is none who does good.”

Psalm 14:1
