During a recent dangerous wildfire in Colorado, firefighters got some unexpected help and comfort from a very special local goat that guided them through the burning hills.
A crew of local heroes was getting ready to hike up a really steep hill to fight the Rock Creek Fire near Cheyenne Mountain State Park. The ground was rocky and slippery and the men knew the climb would be hard.
Right then a goat named Goldie showed up and stood right in front of the crew leader Shane Coyne. She kept looking back and making noises until the men realized she wanted them to follow her.
It is amazing how she led them right up the safest path with the best footing. Coyne said “She was obviously a pro at her job.” Goldie belongs to a firefighter named Pete Glader who was also out there battling the blaze.
The goat stayed right by the crews and even ate the dry brush so it would not catch fire again. Everyone loved having her there during such a scary situation.
Coyne talked about how much they needed the distraction and said “So as many good stories as we can get and bring some levity to it, I think can help with hope and healing.”
The owner saw her take off with the crew and said “Yeah, go have fun and watch over them for us.”
When you look back at your own life, you can probably remember many moments where you were anxious about something, but God brought something to you that instantly calmed your heavy mind. It might be a random act from your kid, a text from your friend, or the funny antics of your pet.
These firefighters had a massive, high-stress mission ahead of them, but a goat was the very thing God used to break the tension and bring a smile to everyone’s face.
