Liberty University Professor Silences Skeptics with 5 Historical Proofs of Jesus’ Existence

A Liberty University history professor shares the historical evidence of Jesus’ existence, and even many atheist scholars agree with him.

As believers, we know Jesus Christ as our Savior who died for our sins, rose from the dead three days later, and still reigns in glory. But there are millions of people who have never had a real encounter with Jesus. What if God placed you in front of a skeptic tomorrow, and they asked you whether Jesus even existed? Our faith is personal, and we don’t need to prove it to anyone. But it helps to be ready with an answer when someone sincerely wants to know. That is where history comes in, and it says far more about Jesus than many people realize.

Dr. Samuel Smith is a history professor at Liberty University. He approaches Jesus using the exact same historical framework applied to any other major historical figure, like Julius Caesar, Alexander the Great, or George Washington. In a recent video, he shared five specific reasons detailing the historical evidence of Jesus’ existence.

1. The Methods of History

Dr. Smith explains that historians do not just guess. They look for early sources, multiple independent accounts, eyewitness connections, and confirmation from neutral or hostile sources. He applies these exact standard rules of evidence to investigate the historical Jesus.

2. The New Testament as a Primary Source

According to Dr. Smith, the New Testament is a highly valid primary source. The Apostle Paul’s earliest letters were written within about 20 years of Jesus’ death instead of centuries later. In ancient history that short time gap is basically the blink of an eye. It means Paul was writing while the actual eyewitnesses were still walking around and could have easily called him out if he was making things up.

The Gospels were also written within the first generation of Christians to consistently detail His life. Dr. Smith pointed out that we have almost 6,000 ancient Greek manuscripts of the New Testament and 18,000 non-Greek manuscripts in Latin and other languages.

We usually assume ancient history is just pieced together from a few scattered fragments. Hearing that there are 24,000 ancient manuscripts really shifts how we view the biblical text.

3. Non-Christian Sources

The proof of Jesus existence also comes from secular records. Dr. Smith lists several non-Christian sources from antiquity. While many of these writers were enemies of Christianity, some were simply neutral observers.

Tacitus, a Roman historian with access to state archives, clearly wrote, “Christ, from whom the name had its origin, suffered the extreme penalty during the reign of Tiberius at the hands of… Pontius Pilate.”

Pliny the Younger, a Roman governor, wrote letters to the emperor Trajan noting that Christians met on a fixed day, likely Sunday, to sing a hymn to Christ as to a god.

The Jewish historian Josephus wrote, “At this time there was Jesus a wise man… Pilate condemned him to the cross.” The ancient Jewish Talmud also mentions Yeshu being hanged, a reference to His crucifixion.

It makes sense that loyal followers would write about their teacher. But seeing secular and hostile writers record the same fact carries a different kind of weight.

4. Comparison with Other Ancient Figures

When you compare Jesus with other famous ancient people, the amount of evidence is striking. We have zero direct writings from Socrates, and the first full account of Alexander the Great was written 300 years after he died. Jesus, however, had multiple accounts written about Him within a few decades of His death.

According to Dr. Smith, Jesus Christ stands as one of the most validated figures in ancient history.

5. Historical Evidence of the Resurrection

Dr. Smith argues that the resurrection itself rests on strong historical evidence. The disciples held to their testimony of what they saw and the tomb was empty. He also points out the massive movement that Christianity became right after the resurrection. People were suddenly going throughout the known world preaching the gospel that Jesus had died and rose again.

Dr. Smith notes that Paul wrote about 500 people seeing the risen Jesus and many of those witnesses were still living at the time. They could have easily refuted the claim if it were false.

He also references scholar Gary Habermas and his “minimal facts” approach, which notes that almost all historians agree the disciples genuinely believed they saw Jesus rise from the dead. Furthermore, skeptics like James, the brother of Jesus, and hostile enemies like Paul completely transformed their lives after seeing the risen Christ.

Additional Historical Evidence of Jesus’ Existence

Beyond what Dr. Smith mentioned in the video, historians also look at several other crucial pieces of evidence to confirm the biblical narrative:

The Roman Historian Suetonius: Writing in the early second century, Suetonius recorded that the Emperor Claudius expelled Jews from Rome because they were causing constant disturbances at the instigation of “Chrestus,” which many historians believe refers to Christ.

The Pilate Stone: Discovered in 1961 in Caesarea Maritima, this limestone block contains a carved inscription confirming that Pontius Pilate was indeed the prefect of Judaea, exactly matching the New Testament accounts.

Again and again, history and archaeology confirm what Scripture has told us all along. And God does this because He wants everyone to come to know Him and be saved. But why does this matter for us as believers? There will always be voices around us trying to shake our confidence in Jesus and confuse us. That is exactly why we need to be rooted in the Word of God and equipped with knowledge. This will not only strengthen our own walk with God but also help us share the truth with others and point them to Jesus.

“But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear.” 1 Peter 3:15 (NKJV)
