We all have things we love doing. Maybe it’s gardening, reading, or watching sports. For little Graham Huntley, that passion is trains.

Most of us would never think our hobbies could save lives, but God has a way of using what we love for bigger purposes.

Graham Huntley loves trains more than anything else. You can find him watching trains pass through downtown Waxhaw almost every day.

When Channel 9’s Eli Brand asked him why he loves trains so much, Graham gave the sweetest answer: “That when I wave at them, they wave at me back.”

On Monday, Graham was doing what he always does. He was watching for trains with his mom, Amber. That’s when he saw something wrong.

A tree had fallen right across the railroad tracks. A train was coming, and Graham knew this meant serious trouble.

Graham did not freeze up. He did not stay quiet. He immediately told nearby adults about the dangerous tree blocking the tracks.

His warning reached the right people quickly. Someone called ahead to warn the train conductor about the obstruction.

The conductor hit the emergency brakes to stop the massive train. With a loud sound, witnesses watched as the train came to a complete stop just feet from the tree.

Without Graham’s sharp eyes and quick action, the train would have crashed into the tree.

“Of course, we were so proud of his observant nature, but I think the biggest thing is he was able to learn, you see something, you say something,” Amber Huntley said about her son’s actions.

The man Graham warned told him something that made the boy beam with pride. “That I saved the day,” Graham repeated, understanding that his love for trains had helped protect many people.

Graham wants to become a train conductor when he grows up. His family says they will keep taking him to watch trains pass through their town.

His quick thinking shows us that God can use anyone, no matter how young, to protect others when we stay alert and speak up about danger.
