When we read the Bible, some passages or verses may confuse us at first. We might read something and wonder what it really means. But then we read it again and again, and God speaks it to our heart.
But what about someone reading the Bible for the very first time? Comedian Michael Jr. shares his experience of reading God’s Word for the first time and his story will make you smile.
Michael Jr. was 27 years old when he decided to do something specific. He wanted to read the entire Bible before giving his life to Christ. But he had a problem. He didn’t own a Bible.
A few days later, he was at O’Hare Airport when something amazing happened. A woman walked straight up to him and handed him a Bible. She didn’t say a word. She just walked away. God had answered his need.
Michael opened his new Bible and got a surprise. The book was huge. Then he noticed something that made him smile.
The Bible was made in Grand Rapids, Michigan. That’s where he was from too. “Why come we never met before?” he joked.
He started reading right away. He went to church and kept reading. He really wanted to give his life to Jesus, but he had told himself he would finish the Bible first. So he read for 12 to 14 hours every day. That came out to about nine chapters a day.
After 36 days, he finished the whole Bible.
But when he got to the Gospels, something confused him. “I got to the part in Matthew where it said Jesus died for me,” Michael said. “Yo, I didn’t even know till age 27 that Jesus died for me. I didn’t know until I read it right there in Matthew. I’ve been to church people, but nobody was explaining in a way that I could clearly understand what took place.”
Then he turned to the next book. “Then I turned to Mark and he died again. I’m like, what in the world?” He honestly thought Jesus died four times as he read Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
“Why are you going back in the garden, Jesus? Why are you going back there?” he wondered.
His story makes us smile, but it also shows us something important. We don’t need to understand everything before we come to God. He takes us as we are, questions and all.
We should also strive to read and study the Word of God, because God speaks to us through Scripture and it gives wisdom and points us to eternal life.
