A hungry wild elephant walked into a grocery store in Thailand to grab some snacks. But what amazed everyone was how calm and careful he was.
Sometimes we worry about our needs and wonder how they will be met. But God knows what we need before we ask. He provides for us, just as He provides for every creature He made.
Plai Biang Lek, a 30-year-old elephant, lives near Khao Yai National Park in northeastern Thailand. On Monday, he decided to visit a small grocery store next to the main road.
The massive elephant bent down and squeezed his whole body through the store entrance like he owned the place.
Videos show him standing calmly at the counter, reaching for snacks with his trunk. Park workers tried to get him to leave, but he ignored them completely. He knew what he wanted and took his time getting it.
Shop owner Kamploy Kakaew watched the whole thing happen. She seemed more amused than upset as she later described the visit. “He ate about nine bags of sweet rice crackers, a sandwich and some dried bananas” that she had bought that morning, she said.
The elephant caused very little damage, leaving only muddy footprints on the floor and ceiling.
After getting his snacks, the elephant backed out of the store with a bag still in his trunk. He left without hurting anyone or causing real problems.
Danai Sookkanthachat, a park worker who knows this elephant well, said Plai Biang Lek often visits people’s homes looking for food. But this was his first time in a grocery store.
Wild elephants in Thailand are facing challenges. Around 4,000 live in the wild. But their forest homes are shrinking as farmers clear land for crops.
With less food and space, the elephants go into human areas to find food. This can lead to dangerous situations.
This story shows us how important it is to protect the wildlife. Every elephant, bird, and forest animal deserves the space God intended for them.
When we protect their world, we honor the Creator who made us all.
