A Texas firefighter and his wife are breaking a century-old family pattern by expecting their first daughter after 108 years of welcoming only sons.
Most parents have their hopes when they’re expecting. Some dream of a little girl to dress up, while others hope for a boy to carry on the family name. But those dreams don’t always come true right away.
Sometimes families wait years, even generations, for what they’ve been hoping for. God knows exactly what each family needs and when they need it.
For the Sherman family, they waited over a century for their little girl.
Montgomery County firefighter Michael Sherman and his wife Joacquia were stunned to discover they’re expecting a baby girl during a surprise gender reveal party on Sunday.
The couple, who already have a 5-year-old son named Mekhai, never imagined they would be the ones to end their family’s remarkable streak.
“I just feel honored that, finally, we are the ones bringing the baby girl into the world. Finally, after over a hundred years. It’s amazing,” Michael Sherman said.
The 34-year-old lieutenant was completely caught off guard when what was supposed to be a small family gathering turned into a celebration with relatives from across the United States.
The last girl born into the Sherman family was Orah Belle Sherman in 1917, Michael’s great-great aunt who became a civil rights trailblazer in Atlanta.
“She met a lot of civil rights leaders, and she made an impact in Atlanta,” said Great-Grandmother Lydia Robertson, who knew Orah Belle personally.
For over a century, the Sherman family tree has been filled exclusively with boys. Michael’s father had three sons, his grandfather had two boys, and the pattern continued through every generation since 1917.
Joacquia, a TSA employee at George Bush Intercontinental Airport, is due to give birth around March 11, 2026. “We didn’t think it was quite possible for us to even have a girl,” she admitted.
The feel-good story touched many hearts on the internet.
One person wrote, “She is going to be THE most loved child in the world! How sweet!”
Another person wrote, “This baby girl is already a family legend.”
This story is a beautiful reminder that God’s timing is always perfect. He never forgets the prayers we pray and the tears we shed. He will answer them at the right time.
