Charlotte comedian and funeral director Shuler King had judges and audiences roaring with laughter during his America’s Got Talent audition.
When we think about funeral directors, comedy is probably the last thing that comes to mind. We picture quiet, serious people in dark suits who speak in hushed tones and handle life’s most solemn moments.
We expect them to comfort grieving families with gentle words and respectful silence. We never imagine them cracking jokes or making us laugh until our sides hurt.
Shuler King completely changed that picture when he walked onto the AGT stage during Season 20 on June 24, carrying both the weight of his serious profession and the gift of making people smile.
King introduced himself with confidence and a big smile. “Ladies and gentlemen, that’s right. I am a comedian, and I’m also a licensed funeral director and embalmer.” The judges immediately perked up. They knew they were about to hear something different.
Then he delivered his first punchline. “If anybody in here starts choking, go on and let God have His way so I can leave here with a check.” The audience burst into laughter. The judges couldn’t help themselves either.
Shuler shared stories from his funeral home work that had everyone in stitches. He talked about cold handed morticians and awkward moments with grieving families.
The biggest laugh came when he described thinking a dead man had grabbed his leg. The entire arena erupted when he admitted, “You don’t know embarrassment until you’ve had to look a family in the face and say, ‘I’m sorry for peeing on your daddy.'”
All the four judges and the audience gave him a standing ovation. Simon Cowell called Shuler “seriously brilliant.” All four judges said yes.
This wasn’t Shuler’s first time in the spotlight.
Shuler has been doing comedy for over twenty years. He started at Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, South Carolina, back in 2004. He spent decades touring and building his audience online.
His comedy clips went viral on TikTok in 2024. He got over 7 million views and nearly 12 million likes. People couldn’t get enough of his unique humor.
All of that work led him to the biggest stage of his career.
“I’ve been making people laugh for years, but AGT gave me a stage to show the world what I do,” he said. “Two minutes changed everything.”
Even with his comedy success, Shuler still works as a funeral director. He says his day job shapes how he sees comedy and life. “I’ve been touring, building my audience and honoring my family’s legacy in funeral service,” he shared.
The judges and audience loved Shuler King. He won’t be going back to just funeral work anytime soon. Instead, he’s taking his special brand of humor to millions of people.
