American Idol Contestant Brings Judges to Their Feet With Powerful Worship Cover of ‘Ain’t No Grave’

A young mom and bluegrass gospel singer named Hannah Harper brought American Idol‘s Hawaii round to a standstill when her performance of ‘Ain’t No Grave‘ turned a televised singing competition into something nobody on that stage was prepared for.

We’ve watched plenty of contestants walk onto the American Idol stage over the years. Most of the time, you can tell — it’s a competition. Everyone’s performing for the judges, for the votes, for the title. And that’s fine, that’s the show.

But every once in a while, we see someone who comes along and makes you completely forget all of that. Hannah Harper was one of them. As she started singing, we didn’t feel it like a competition at all. It just… disappeared. We weren’t watching a contestant anymore. We were worshipping right along with her.

From the first note, the judges weren’t sitting. They were up. Clapping. Moved. And honestly, who could blame them? Hannah wasn’t performing. She was preaching. There’s a difference, and you feel it in your chest when it happens.

‘Ain’t No Grave,’ a resurrection anthem connected to Bethel Music, has that kind of weight to it — and Hannah carried every bit of it.

Luke Bryan was so caught up in what he witnessed that he gave what she does its own genre on the spot — “Resurrection Rock.”

Carrie Underwood, already emotional from Hannah’s very first audition, saw something of herself in this woman and couldn’t hide it.

That first audition is worth knowing about. Hannah performed an original song called ‘String Cheese‘ — written during one of the hardest seasons of her life.

After her youngest son was born, she battled postpartum depression hard. She described sitting on the couch, wallowing, praying for God to calm her spirit, when her little boy kept tugging at her asking her to open his snack. That tiny moment cracked something open.

She realized motherhood was her ministry. She says it helped her “kick the depression in the butt.” Carrie wept.

Hannah grew up in the Harper Family — a traveling bluegrass gospel band — singing in churches and festivals her whole life. The stage isn’t new to her.

But earlier in the competition, Luke challenged her to ditch the guitar, her self-described “emotional support,” and bare her soul without it. By Hawaii, she had done exactly that — and then some.

One viewer wrote, “That is amazing that Jesus is being glorified in this year’s American Idol!” Another said, “She has an angelic voice! Praise God baby girl!”

We couldn’t have said it better ourselves.

Verse of the Day

“[The Lord the Shepherd of His People] A Psalm of David. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake.”
