A 102-year-old Houston woman still wears high heels, gets her nails done monthly, and does her own grocery shopping every week.
Born on December 22, 1922, in Houston’s Fifth Ward, Ivy Marie Broussard graduated from Wheatley High School. She worked as a nurse and hairstylist before raising her family.
Her husband died 52 years ago, but she raised two sons and now has eight grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren.
This 102-year-old woman lives life her way. Once a month, she goes to grocery store. She doesn’t need help from anyone. “I get my buggy and walk around and get what I want,” Broussard explained.
She also gets her nails done every month and still cooks for other seniors in her building. Every night, she works on word search puzzles to keep her mind sharp.
A few months ago, she took a three-day train trip to California on Amtrak. Her family said she handled it without any problems. Now she’s planning a bus trip to a Louisiana casino with her senior friends.
When someone asked why she still dresses up and wears high heels, Broussard had a quick answer. “I want to look good so I might catch me a boyfriend,” she laughed. “I’m still alive.”
Her son knows his mother well. “She liked doing what she liked to do. And you can’t get her not to do if she don’t want to do it,” he said.
Broussard gives credit to God for her long life. She stays active in her church and attends services regularly. She also goes to fashion shows and community events. Her faith keeps her going strong.
