John Crist’s comedy about a Spirit Airlines flight turned a medical emergency into viral gold.
We’ve all been stuck in situations where things go wrong and we don’t know what to do. Sure, some people stay calm under pressure, but most of us start to panic a little when emergencies happen.
Our minds race. We look around hoping someone else knows what to do. We pray someone will step up and take charge. That’s why John’s reaction on that Spirit flight hit so close to home for many of us.
The whole thing started when someone on the plane had a medical problem. The flight crew came on the speaker asking if there was a doctor on board. That’s when Crist’s comedian brain kicked in.
“I go, ‘There’s no doctor on a Spirit Airlines flight!'” he said. “I go, ‘You know where the doctors are? On Delta, OK?'”
When nobody answered the call for a doctor, the crew started asking for other kinds of help. They wanted to know if there was a nurse on the plane. Crist kept making his funny observations about the situation.
“I go, ‘There’s no medical professional on this flight,'” he said. “This ticket cost $40, we’re all unemployed.”
The crew got more desperate as time went on. They asked if anyone had dropped out of nursing school. Then they wanted to know if anyone had watched ‘Grey’s Anatomy.’
One woman said she had been a nurse for Halloween, and the crew was ready to take that help.
Crist’s story shows us something beautiful about how we handle stress. He didn’t make light of someone being hurt.
Instead, he found a way to help everyone relax during a tense time. His jokes probably made the whole plane feel a little better.
