A father got the shock of his bedtime routine when his 3-year-old daughter confessed to punching a man in the nose. But the truth was far more innocent and hilarious than anyone expected.
We have all had those moments where a child says something that stops us completely. One sentence and the whole room goes quiet.
Children are so wonderfully honest. They have not learned to hide things yet, and there is something beautiful about that. God made them that way. And this little girl was carrying something on her heart that she just had to get out before she could sleep. “I so sorry I punched that man’s nose.”
Her dad stopped everything. “What?” She was serious. “Yeah, I hit it so hard. I’m so sorry.” She was not joking around.
He asked when it happened. “Yesterday,” she said. And if you have ever spent time around toddlers, you know that yesterday means absolutely anytime in the past. Could be last week. Could be last month. Bless her heart.
So dad brought in the older children to help figure it out. The 9-year-old started asking questions. The 7-year-old wanted to know what the punch sounded like. And the little girl, tired and completely sincere, said it was yellow. And in a big box.
And then it all came back. The elevator. The office visit. The alarm button she had pressed with everything she had. That little button looked just like a nose on a face, and she had been sorry about it ever since.
She did not punch anyone. But she thought she had, and it bothered her little heart until she said something.
And that right there is worth thinking about today. This little girl could not rest until she made things right. She brought it to her dad because she trusted him. That is exactly what God invites us to do with Him. Bring it to Him. All of it. The things that keep us up at night. The mistakes we replay in our heads.
Today, let us come to God with that same open, childlike heart. Just like this sweet little girl, let us not carry it alone anymore.
