A mother took a leap of faith and tossed her baby from a third story window when an explosion trapped them in their Cleveland apartment.
As parents, we may go to any extent to protect our children from harm. But in some situations, we might need to make decisions that truly take guts and courage.
That’s exactly what a mom did when she trusted a group of strangers and threw her baby from a burning building.
Explosion Shakes the Whole Building
Barnes was just walking through the parking lot at Rainbow Terrace Apartments on Monday. Then he heard strange sounds.
“I heard something going like, ‘Tick, tick.’ Then, ‘BOOM!’ It blew up and I flipped,” Barnes said. The whole building shook from the explosion.
Mother and Baby Get Trapped by Flames
After Barnes made sure he was okay, he looked around to see who needed help. That’s when he saw something that made his heart race.
A woman stood at a third story window holding her baby. Flames were getting closer.
Barnes didn’t think twice. He called out to the scared mother above him. “Drop the baby, let her go. I am going to catch her,” he told her.
Other people gathered around Barnes to help catch the baby too.
Mom Makes the Hardest Choice
The mother had to make the hardest choice any parent could face. She had to trust strangers with her child’s life.
Barnes understood exactly how she felt. “I was thinking about my own kids. This is my baby she has in her hands,” he said.
The plan worked. The baby landed safely in their arms.
Then the mother used a bed sheet to climb down to safety. Both mother and baby made it out alive.
Hero Barnes Credits God for Rescue
Barnes knew who deserved the credit. “I was thanking God that that baby got saved and the lady too,” he said.
His words show us how God works through ordinary people doing extraordinary things.
The explosion left five people with serious injuries and more than 100 families without homes. Everything they owned was gone.
Now groups are collecting donations to help these families.
Let us pray for all the families who lost their homes and for those who were injured in this terrible explosion.
