A rescue dog finally connected with his foster mom when she figured out he spoke a different language.
Monica Matute fostered a Chihuahua named Nacho in Los Angeles. The little dog seemed shy. He wouldn’t respond when Monica gave him commands. She felt confused about why he acted this way.
Then Monica tried something different. She spoke to Nacho in Spanish. His whole personality changed. “I had not thought of asking him anything in Spanish, which is ironic since he’s a Chihuahua,” Monica told ABC News.
When Monica asked “Qué pasé?” Nacho’s ears perked up right away. She said “vamos,” and Nacho jumped off her bed. His tail wagged with excitement. “I started talking to him in Spanish, and it was the most energetic we had seen him,” Monica said.
Monica shared videos of Nacho on TikTok. One video showed the moment she discovered Nacho understood Spanish. Over three million people watched it. Monica posted more videos showing Nacho’s daily life.
“He’s the kind of dog that will follow you everywhere, and is just perfectly content just being your shadow,” she said in one video.
Someone found Nacho wandering around the Wags and Walks adoption center in September. The shelter later transferred him to Oregon Humane Society in Portland.
Nancy Garza-Harris and her husband Rick live in Seattle. They saw Nacho’s videos online. They drove three hours to meet him.
“Rick sat on a bench, and he jumped up into Rick’s lap, and it was like, ‘Okay, well, that’s that,'” Nancy told ABC News. They adopted Nacho that day.
Nancy now calls Nacho “mi hijo,” which means “my son” in Spanish.
This sweet story shows us something important. Every creature God made deserves our patience and care. When we take time to understand others, beautiful things happen.
Nacho just needed someone who spoke his language.
