Man Drops Engagement Ring 118 Feet During Proposal, Kind Stranger Saves the Day

A romantic proposal on a high bridge in Michigan turned into a near disaster when the engagement ring slipped through the man’s fingers and fell 118 feet into the deep snow below.

Many of us have experienced those panic moments when things slip out of our hands. For instance, we plan for a Sunday sermon. We work hard, study the Bible, take notes, and then, at the pulpit, we are not able to say what we truly wanted to share.

In this story, a man planned a dream proposal, and in a moment of panic, everything seemed ruined. But God turned their heartbreak into an unforgettable moment they will never forget.

Trevor Van Camp of Rochester Hills wanted to make his proposal to Danielle Jenkins perfect. He took her to the SkyBridge at Boyne Mountain Resort during a weekend trip.

This bridge is a massive structure that hangs 118 feet above the ground. As the couple stood under the Christmas lights, Trevor took a knee to ask Danielle to marry him.

However, his nerves took over. “When I went to go get the ring out of the box, mind you, I’m shaken up, I look down, like not a good idea, and yeah, I dropped the ring,” Trevor said.

The ring fell through the open metal grate of the bridge floor. It disappeared into the dark night and landed somewhere on the snowy ski slope far below.

The couple panicked for a moment but decided they had to try to find it.

The resort gave the couple permission to search the mountain. They spent two and a half hours looking through the cold snow. They were not alone in their search.

Pat Harper, the night shift snowmaking supervisor at Boyne Mountain, stepped in to help. He happened to have metal detectors in his car.

The group used the detectors to scan the deep snow and dirt. By 10 p.m., they were almost ready to give up. Then, Pat’s metal detector picked up a signal.

Pat dug into the snow but did not see anything at first. He reached down and pulled up a handful of snow. Inside that handful was the edge of the ring.

Pat was shocked by the discovery. “I kind of sat there for a minute and I was like, ‘There’s no way you just found that,'” he said.

His willingness to stay late and use his own tools saved the proposal. Danielle was so thankful for his help. “I give big props and kudos to Pat for doing that for us, because he saved the day, he really did,” she said.

The couple finally got to put the ring on Danielle’s finger. Even though the night did not go as planned, they now have a unique story about their engagement.

Danielle noted that it was an experience they will always remember. They plan to go back to the resort in the winter to finish their walk across the bridge and enjoy the full experience.

How many times has God sent people like Pat into our lives when our hope felt lost? When things go wrong and plans fall apart, God is still at work behind the scenes. Have peace in knowing that a breakthrough is coming.

Verse of the Day

“Seek good and not evil, That you may live; So the Lord God of hosts will be with you, As you have spoken. Hate evil, love good; Establish justice in the gate. It may be that the Lord God of hosts Will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.”

Amos 5:14-15
