A 13-year-old girl who survived the deadly Camp Mystic flooding rewrote a moving rendition of ‘Hallelujah.’ Skyler Derrington’s new version honors those who lost their lives and shares how faith carried her through the disaster.
The flash flooding in central Texas took more than 130 lives. Nearly 30 of them were young people and counselors at Camp Mystic, a private Christian summer camp for girls. The century-old camp sits in Hunt, an area in Kerr County, Texas.
On July 4th, 2025, the Guadalupe River turned deadly. Heavy rains dumped 10 to 12 inches of water in a very short time.
The river rose 22 to 29 feet in less than two hours. It swept away cabins, roads, and everything in its path.
The youngest campers stayed in cabins close to the river. These low cabins sat less than 500 feet from the water. When the flood hit, these girls were among the first to be trapped.
Skyler Derrington had been going to Camp Mystic since she was little. But this summer, the camp turned into a tragedy she would never forget.
During that painful time, she found comfort in her faith in God. She took Leonard Cohen’s famous 1985 song ‘Hallelujah’ and made it her own.
Her version tells what happened that terrible day. She sings:
Now I heard there was a giant flood
But we were washed in Jesus’ blood
On July the 4th, 2025, the water rose and we went adrift.
Skyler’s lyrics show her strong faith. She continues:
Our faith was strong you showed us love like only God from up above
your prayers and hugs and love overwhelmed us.
She posted her performance on YouTube. In the video, you can hear the pain in her voice. But you also hear something else. Hope. Love. Faith that God was with them even in the worst moment.
This brave girl turned her nightmare into a song of worship. Her words remind us that God never leaves us alone.
Even when the waters rise and everything seems lost, His love remains.
Let’s keep Skyler, all the survivors, and the families who lost loved ones in our prayers.
