This halftime baby race during the UNC vs Duke rivalry game at the Dean E. Smith Center is pure joy. Watching tiny babies crawl across a huge basketball court while parents wave keys and snacks is something you just have to see for yourself.
I had the biggest smile on my face the whole time I watched this clip. Halftime shows at college basketball games can be hit or miss but this baby crawl race had the whole arena on their feet. The energy inside the Dean E. Smith Center in Chapel Hill North Carolina was incredible as UNC fans cheered on these little ones.
The parents lined up on one side of the shiny wooden court and set their babies down at the starting line. On the other end parents were doing everything they could think of to get their baby to crawl forward. Some held up colorful toys and car keys while others waved snacks or rattled plastic cups. You could see the babies looking around completely confused by the loud crowd cheering for them.
Right after the countdown, one speedy little baby took off like a rocket down the court. Everyone in the stands was sure she had an easy win in the bag. But right before crossing the finish line mat, she just stopped cold. She sat back on her knees staring out at the crowd while her mom tried bribing her with a bottle. A second baby crawled right up next to her but sat down too and refused to budge.
Then out of nowhere a steady little crawler who had been trailing behind kept moving right past everyone. While the early leaders were busy hanging out inches from victory this persistent little one crawled straight over the line and took first place. I couldn’t help laughing out loud as the whole stadium erupted in wild cheers.
Seeing a giant arena full of rival fans setting aside their basketball debate to cheer for little children is truly heart warming. It is a sweet funny memory that brings a smile to anyone who watches it.
