A stray cat that wandered onto a porch in Vian, Oklahoma ended up becoming a mother to five kittens and a wild baby rabbit.
Kathy Price heard meowing outside her home one day and went to check. When she opened the door the cat walked straight in. That was that.
The Prices had taken in strays before so this wasn’t completely new territory. Their own house cat Miss Kitty had started out as a feral cat. But this tortoiseshell was different. She was calm, friendly, and clearly used to being around people.
“She was incredibly tame and had been someone’s house cat, and we were concerned about her because she lost her family,” Price said.
Price set up a box with a towel on the porch. On Memorial Day the cat gave birth to five kittens, three orange and two gray. A few days later her husband was checking on them and stopped.
“How many kittens did she have?” he asked. Price said five. “There’s six in here,” he said. Price looked closer. “That’s a bunny.”
Nobody knows how that rabbit ended up in the litter. But the mother cat didn’t hesitate. She took it in and nursed it like her own. Price looked it up and found that cats do this. They adopt kittens, puppies, rabbits. They’re just wired that way.
All six are healthy. The bunny is hopping around and she is his mama. Price is now looking for homes for the whole family. The bunny will eventually go back to the wild when he’s big enough.
This mama cat took in that wild rabbit and raised it as her own. Aren’t our lives like that rabbit? We were left in our sins to die. But Jesus rescued us and called us His own.
He paid the ultimate price on the cross to offer us salvation and eternal life. He did not look at who we are, where we came from, or what we had done. And He is still nurturing us today through His grace and love that never runs out.
