Firefighter Sat Down at a Piano in a Senior Center and Made Everyone Smile

A Mesa firefighter is going viral after doing something nobody expected during a medical call at a senior living community.

Derek Andresen and his crew were called out to check on a patient at the community. Once they made sure the person was okay his crew got ready to leave. But Andresen noticed a piano sitting in the gathering space and something told him to sit down and play.

A Surprise Performance

So he sat at the piano and started playing. Residents came out of their rooms and gathered around him. Nobody expected a concert from the same firefighters who had just answered their call for help.

The music brought smiles. It brought tears too. And when he finished the whole room broke into applause.

Someone in the room caught the moment on video. That clip has now been viewed more than a million times online. People from all over the country have been leaving comments about it, many saying it made their day.

Not His First Time

Andresen’s mother even joined in on the conversation online. She shared with pride that her son never took a single piano lesson. He taught himself how to play, start to finish.

This actually is not the first time Andresen has done something like this. Back during the pandemic he played piano for his community too and it caught a lot of attention back then as well.

I cannot imagine the stress that comes with a firefighter’s job, isn’t it. Sirens, emergencies, split second decisions. And in the middle of all that, this man turns to a piano to breathe.

On the other side, we don’t think much about life inside a senior living community. Many people there spend their days quiet and alone. They miss the noise of a full house. They miss the sound of grandkids running around and all the little things we take for granted. They need moments like this more than we realize.

And that is exactly what this firefighter gave them. A few minutes at a piano brightened the whole room. It gave them something to talk about and something to smile over.

It may have even given them something to look forward to the next day. It did not stop there either. It brightened the day of everyone who watched the video online too, all the way from their phones and computers, probably people having a hard day of their own.

This firefighter did not do something extraordinary. He just did what he already knew how to do and it brought joy to that entire nursing home and beyond.

We all have some kind of skill that we think is too small to matter, maybe it is singing, maybe it is baking, maybe it is just sitting and listening to someone.

We tell ourselves nobody would care or it is not the right time. But you never know how many people need exactly what you have to give. So the next time you get the chance, don’t hold back. Use what you have. You might end up brightening someone’s whole day without even trying.

Verse of the Day

“[Serve God with Spiritual Gifts] For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.”

Romans 12:3
