An unborn baby girl surprised her parents by smiling during a routine ultrasound when she heard her father’s voice.
I have seen many ultrasound videos over the years but this one really got me. There is something about a baby responding to her daddy’s voice before she is even born that makes you stop and think about how much God puts into a tiny life we cannot even see yet.
The ultrasound technician was moving the scanner around on the mother’s belly trying to find the baby girl. The proud father leaned right over and started kissing his wife’s stomach while talking to his little girl.
Right then and there, the baby on the screen started smiling in response to her dad’s voice and kisses. He went back to kiss her a second time and the baby gave another huge grin. The whole room was just filled with pure excitement and laughter.
The baby’s mother Lia Oliveira was overcome with love as she watched the entire thing unfold. “I was completely overwhelmed with emotion and immediately started crying happy tears,” mom Lia Oliveira said.
It was such a beautiful sight and it quickly spread around the internet giving people everywhere a reason to smile. Lia called it a “core memory” for their family and says she’s grateful the moment has brought “a little sunshine” to millions of people around the world.
The Bible tells us in Psalm 139 that God forms us in our mother’s womb and knows us before we are even born. This little girl smiling at her father’s voice is a sweet reminder of that. She already knew love before she ever took a breath outside her mom.
What truly amazes me is that a baby in the womb is already paying close attention to the world long before entering it. By around the twenty-fourth week of pregnancy, a little one can hear sounds coming from the outside, easily recognizing both the mother’s soothing voice and the father’s deeper tones over time.
Unborn babies can even feel gentle pressure on the mother’s belly, often wiggling or pushing tiny hands and feet right toward a loving hand. It is truly remarkable how God forms a life in our belly, carefully nourishing them through every stage and weaving in bonds that connect a child to family long before taking that very first breath.
