A woman born without a uterus has recently delivered a healthy baby girl, marking a significant milestone in medical history.
In Birmingham, Liz Goldman’s life took a remarkable turn when she welcomed her daughter, Zari Grace, into the world. At 14, doctors had told Liz that pregnancy would be impossible for her due to not having a uterus. But she held on to her hope that one day she would become a mother.
Children are undoubtedly a blessing from God. The Bible encourages us to multiply and glorify His name through the bonds of family. However, for many, the path to parenthood is not always straightforward. Statistics show that approximately 48 million couples around the world are living with infertility.
17 years later, God answered her prayers through a medical breakthrough. “I was told at 14 I would never be able to carry my own baby,” said Goldman. “17 years later, here she is! And I got to carry her to almost 37 weeks.”
The journey to motherhood was not an easy one for Goldman. She participated in a pioneering uterus transplant program at UAB. This included numerous medical procedures and regular visits for treatment. “There’s so much that goes into this,” Goldman said. “You factor in transplant, transplant meds, being down at UAB almost every week for lab draws or appointments or biopsies…seeing her for the first time over the curtain was a dream come true.”
When Liz is counting her blessings, she is thankful to the donor family for their selfless decision to donate their daughter’s organs after a tragic loss.
“It’s hard for organ donors’ families – what they’re having to go through, but then on the flip side, she’s able to see what donating her daughter’s uterus did for us and the positive impact it’s had on our family.” Goldman said.
