‘Goodness of God’ tells the story of a faithful God who walks with us, even when things are hard. It speaks to all of us who have leaned on His love in both the good and the painful parts of life.

Canaan James Hill, an aspiring preacher, stood on the American Idol stage and shared his love for God through a song that many believers hold close.

He graduated high school early to follow his calling, saying, “So that I can go forward with my gift and do what God has called and chosen me to do.”

Hill sang ‘Goodness of God,’ which was first released by Bethel Music and Jenn Johnson in 2019. The lyrics reflect on God’s faithfulness, with lines like “All my life You have been faithful.”

CeCe Winans later covered the song on her 2021 album ‘Believe For It,’ and her version also brought it to new audiences. Hill’s performance was filled with emotion and purpose.

The judges noticed right away. Lionel Richie said, “I just applaud you for yet another fantastic performance.” Carrie Underwood, a guest mentor, told him, “Thank you.”

Luke Bryan added, “He baptizes me every time he sings.”

These words showed how deeply the performance touched them. Hill’s strong voice and message of faith helped him earn a spot in the Top 10.

Throughout the season, he has consistently showcased his deep-rooted faith by choosing gospel songs like ‘I Need Your Glory,’ ‘Never Would Have Made It,’ and ‘Mary, Don’t You Weep.’
