Three Christian astronauts share how their space missions strengthened their faith in God.
Imagine seeing our whole planet from way up high and knowing for sure that only God could have made something so perfect. That’s exactly what happened to these three Christian men.
Jeffrey Williams spent 534 days in space. Charlie Duke walked on the moon. Butch Wilmore just got back from a longer trip than planned.
All three love Jesus, and all three say space made their faith in God even stronger.
What They Saw Made Them Praise God
Jeffrey Williams has the best way to explain what amazed him most. “The biggest wow for me is the grandeur of this place that we call home which God created and uniquely provisioned for our habitation that we call Earth,” he said.
Williams flew around Earth 16 times every single day for a year and a half. Every time he looked down, he saw God’s handiwork.
Charlie Duke got to see something only 24 people have ever seen. He watched Earth rising from behind the moon.
“To be honest, my first thought was we are long way from home. I hope this thing holds together,” Duke said. “But then the beauty of it hit that vision of Earth. It’s just a beautiful planet… just that jewel just suspended in the blackness of space.”
Duke remembered Job 26:7 when he saw the breathtaking view of Earth. “I get back and I look in the scriptures and it says, ‘When God made the earth, he suspended it upon nothing.’ That’s exactly what it looks like.”
Do the Bible and Science Contradict Each Other?
People often ask these men how they can believe in both the Bible and science. Jeffrey Williams has a clear answer. “The true understanding of science is only understood through the biblical lens,” he said. He talks about famous scientists like Newton and Kepler who loved God and used science to understand His creation.
Butch Wilmore puts it this way: “The Bible is absolutely true. It is inerrant. It is infallible. It is sufficient for everything we need. It is not a science book, but where it speaks to science, it’s absolutely accurate. 100%.”
They Set the Record Straight
Some people think the moon landings never happened. Charlie Duke finds this hard to understand. He points out that 400,000 people worked on the moon program. “Really?” he asks when people think they could all keep a secret for 55 years.
Jeffrey Williams gets more upset about people who think Earth is flat. “It’s utter foolishness,” he says. “If you can be caught up in that kind of system of belief, you’ve completely detached yourself from the truth, the truth of scripture.”
God’s Plan for Their Lives
Each man sees God’s hand in how they got to space. Charlie Duke says, “I just thank God now looking back his providence in giving me that opportunity to land on the moon.”
Jeffrey Williams describes himself as “a wretched sinner that is saved by grace” before he calls himself an astronaut.
These three men went to space and returned with powerful testimonies of God’s authority and power over all creation. Their stories show us that the more we learn about God’s creation, the more amazing He becomes.
