A college football player became a real-life hero when he risked his life to save a stranger from a burning car.
Imagine you see someone in real danger who needs immediate help. Your heart races as you think about your own safety.
Most of us would freeze or hope someone else steps up to act. But this young man didn’t think twice, he stepped into the danger to save a stranger’s life.
The accident happened just after midnight on Saturday. A car hit a utility pole on Route 9W and caught fire right away.
Power lines were down and sparking all around the crash. Most people would have stayed far away from such a dangerous scene. But Larry Pickett Jr., a 20-year-old Army safety, ran straight toward the burning vehicle.
He pulled the confused driver out of the car and got him to safety. The whole rescue was over in minutes. The car went up in flames right after Larry got the man out. The timing was perfect, like God was watching over both men.
Larry’s father was there and filmed the whole thing. He posted it on social media with words that touched many hearts. “Thank you Jesus that this man will live to see another day!” Larry Pickett Sr. wrote on Instagram. “I am so grateful for my son LJ for saving his life!”
This brave act happened just two days after Larry played his first college football game. He had one tackle in Army’s 30-27 loss to Tarleton State on Friday.
Football runs in his family. His uncle is Ike Taylor, who played 12 seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers and won two Super Bowls.
Larry’s father says his son has always helped others. He once chased down a shoplifter in Raleigh before coming to West Point.
Larry also volunteers at a kids museum in Raleigh and has traveled to Mexico with his parents to build homes for people who need them.
