Denzel Washington shocked reporters when he dismissed his Oscar wins as meaningless and shared what matters most.
We see many people chasing after success, fame, and money. But does any of that really matter? Not at all.
These things lose their shine over time, and people eventually realize none of them can bring true joy and peace.
This is where Denzel Washington’s words become so meaningful.
During a recent interview about his new movie, Denzel shared some thoughtful words of wisdom.
The interviewer brought up all those Oscars Denzel has won over the years. But instead of getting all excited about his awards, Denzel said something that stopped everyone in their tracks.
“I don’t do it for Oscars, I really don’t care about that kind of stuff, you know?” he said.
“I’ve been at this a long time, and there’s time when I won, shouldn’t have won, and shouldn’t have won and won, didn’t win, and should have won. Man gives the award. God gives the reward. I’m not that interested in Oscars.” Denzel said.
Now that’s a man who knows where his treasure lies. Denzel didn’t stop there either. He looked that interviewer right in the eye and said, “On my last day, it ain’t going to do me a bit of good.” Then he added the sweetest thing: “As long as He says, ‘Now, boy, get on up here,’ I’m all right.”
This shouldn’t surprise us one bit if we know anything about Denzel’s story. He grew up in church with a daddy who was a Pentecostal pastor.
Those Sunday school lessons and Bible teachings stuck with him all these years. He carries that foundation with him everywhere he goes.
Denzel keeps his faith strong through daily habits. “I read my Bible every day. I pray every day. I wouldn’t make it without talking to God,” he told Parade magazine. These quiet moments with the Lord keep him grounded.
Back in 2018 at the NAACP Image Awards, Washington reminded everyone there about what brings real happiness.
“True joy and peace don’t come from money or fame. They come from living right with God.”
When Oprah interviewed him, he said, “My faith helps me understand that circumstances don’t dictate my happiness, my inner peace.”
At a college graduation in 2015, Denzel told those young folks, “Put God first in everything you do. That’s the secret. That’s the foundation. Everything I have is by the grace of God.”
At a men’s church meeting, he kept it simple and powerful: “God is real. God is love. It’s my job to lift Him up.”
Denzel’s words touch our hearts because they ring true. All those trophies and awards will gather dust someday. The applause will fade. But God’s approval lasts forever.
Denzel reminds us to stop chasing after things that won’t matter in eternity and start focusing on the One who holds our future in His hands.
