A Florida K-9 named Hoot tracked down a missing 13-year-old boy with autism near railroad tracks in Port St. Lucie, Florida.
You know that feeling when you can’t find your kid at the store for thirty seconds and your heart just drops? Now stretch that out for hours, and the child has autism, and it’s getting dark outside. That’s what this family went through. But God — He already had a plan in motion before they even made the call.
The family reported the boy missing around 5 p.m. Officers got there fast and pulled up surveillance footage that showed him walking toward a neighborhood. By 6 p.m., the Fort Pierce Police Department had called in bloodhounds from Port St. Lucie, and a drone unit went up to scan from the sky.
That’s when K-9 Officer Robert Burdick and Hoot stepped in. They gave Hoot a sniff of the boy’s belongings and she just took off. She pulled them through alleys, around fences, past streets, and right down along the railroad tracks. Night was falling and this dog did not care. She had a job and she was going to finish it.
And she did. They found the boy in the woods right alongside those tracks. Officer Burdick didn’t rush in or shout commands. He just said, “Come pet my dog.” That’s it. That one quiet sentence probably did more for that scared child than anything else could have.
Hoot went from search dog to comfort dog in a heartbeat, and the boy reached right out and petted her on the head. The drone unit confirmed the spot too, and they got him back to his family.
This wasn’t a fluke either. Hoot has helped find four missing children in the past two years. Four kids home safe because of one faithful dog and her handler.
Every child matters to God, and every rescue like this reminds us that He works through willing hands — and willing paws.
We thank the Lord for officers like Burdick, for K-9 heroes like Hoot, and for the technology and teamwork that brought this boy home safe.
