Many of us know how special animals can be. They become part of our families and often surprise us with how much they seem to care.

Sometimes, God uses them in quiet but powerful ways to help and protect the ones around them.

A couple from Milford, Connecticut, is crediting their boxer, Reggie, with saving the life of their smaller dog, Yogi, a French bulldog who suffers from epilepsy.

The two dogs were home alone when the seizure occurred, and it was only later that Sarah McCardle, Yogi’s owner, realized what had happened.

After returning home, she found Yogi struggling to breathe and walk. “I came home to him being blue in the face and having a really hard time walking and breathing,” she said.

Concerned, McCardle reviewed the footage from their home surveillance camera. What looked at first like two dogs playing was actually Yogi having multiple seizures while Reggie stepped in to help.

Yogi, now seven years old, has had seizures since he was about a year old. “He never liked being in a crate like we had, so he was in our bed. So that’s when he first had the first one, and I didn’t even know what it was,” said Craig Strilka, Sarah’s husband.

Because of Yogi’s condition, the couple was hesitant about getting another dog. But Reggie’s arrival changed everything.

Yogi’s health improved noticeably, and he became more active. “He got him going and moving, turned him back into a pup again,” McCardle said. “He has saved his life in more than one way.”

This recent seizure could have been fatal. French bulldogs have small snouts that can make it hard for them to breathe, especially during a seizure. It’s easy for them to choke on their own saliva. But Reggie responded with surprising awareness.

In the video, he can be seen gently rolling Yogi around, trying to get him to cough and breathe properly.

“He rolled him around so that he would get up and cough and not aspirate to get the fluid and stuff out and be able to clear his throat,” McCardle explained.

The couple took Yogi to the vet, and thankfully, he recovered. But the couple knows the outcome could have been much worse.

“If it wasn’t for Reggie moving him all around and being here, I would have come home to him not being alive,” McCardle said.

The video of Reggie’s heroic act went viral and touched many hearts. One viewer commented, “We will never truly understand the magnitude at which animals understand things.”

Another wrote, “Angels come in all different forms. Bless Reggie!!!”

As a reward for his bravery and loyalty, Reggie received a well-deserved steak dinner.
