Good Samaritans Rescue 500-Pound Dolphin Stranded Miles from the Ocean

A group of good Samaritans rescued a dolphin that got stuck in a shallow pond in a South Carolina neighborhood after heavy rains pushed her far from the ocean.

The Lowcountry Marine Mammal Network got a call that seemed too strange to believe. Someone reported seeing a dolphin in a tiny lagoon right in the middle of houses and yards. The rescue team had to check this out for themselves.

What they found broke their hearts. A 500-pound dolphin was trapped in water so shallow she could barely move.

“The animal swam up there due to excessive rainfall and high tides,” the team explained. “As the water receded, she became stuck due to shallow water and fallen trees.”

Eight people had to work together to lift the dolphin named Lucky onto a special rescue tarp. They carried her 75 feet to get her to a truck.

This was no easy job. Every step mattered because Lucky needed to get back to deep water fast.

When the team checked on Lucky’s health, they got a wonderful surprise.

“After a quick health check she was determined to be a 7-foot female known to local researchers at USC Bluffton as Lucky,” they shared. “She’s regularly seen in the May River.”

The Bluffton Fire Department joined the marine team for the two-mile trip to safe waters. They never left Lucky’s side.

They poured water on her to keep her skin wet and healthy during the long journey.

After two hours of careful work, Lucky made it back to her ocean home. She dove right into the deep water like she was saying thank you. Her joy was clear to everyone watching.

God used these caring people to bring Lucky home. Sometimes we get to be His hands helping others in need.
