An elephant at a zoo in Guatemala became a hero when it rescued a drowning gazelle from a pond. The heartwarming video touched millions of hearts online.
The young gazelle had fallen into a pond and couldn’t get out. The concrete walls around the water were too high. The little animal kicked its legs hard, trying to keep its head above water. It was scared and running out of strength.
An adult elephant saw what was happening. It didn’t walk away. Instead, it moved closer to help. The elephant used its long trunk to grab the gazelle’s horn. It tried to lift the small animal out of the water.
The first attempt didn’t work—the elephant lost its grip. But it didn’t give up. On the next attempt, it got a better hold on the gazelle’s horn and lifted the drowning animal out of the water to safety.
A group from the Belgian School watched the incredible moment and caught it on camera. Later, they wrote online:
“The little ones were excited to see so many animals, but the most powerful moment was when they witnessed the zoo’s elephant save a baby gazelle from drowning.”
The elephant didn’t just walk away after the rescue. It went over to check on the gazelle. The other gazelles didn’t seem surprised, but the people watching cheered loudly.
The elephant could have ignored the drowning gazelle. Instead, it chose to help. Can we do the same when we see someone in need? When we choose to love others as ourselves, we reflect the love of Christ.
