A father walking down the aisle by himself at a wedding in Yorkshire, England, unexpectedly brought joy and laughter to everyone in attendance.
Planning a wedding is stressful for everyone, but parents carry more of it. So many things are going through their minds at the same time: are the guests comfortable, will the food turn out right, will the bills stay manageable. But more than all of that, the reality of their child stepping into a whole new chapter of life adds its own emotions and thoughts. Somewhere in all that pressure, it’s easy to forget something basic. And that’s exactly what happened to this loving dad.
It was a special autumn day at Holmfirth Vineyard on Oct. 4 when 60-year-old Neil Crossley prepared to walk his daughter down the aisle. He was focused on his speech and felt nervous about his role.
Just before the walk, he misheard a cue given by the wedding venue staff. “He thought they told him to walk when they had actually said, ‘Wait for me!'” explained the 30-year-old bride, Amy Totty.
Thinking it was his cue, the father set off down the aisle alone. A staff member gasped as he speed walked toward the altar, jogging right after him to get his attention.
He didn’t realize his mistake until an attendant pulled his arm to turn him around. When he turned around, he smiled and shrugged as the entire wedding party, including the groom, 29-year-old Harry Totty, broke into laughter.
The moment turned out to be a blessing for his daughter, too. “I especially appreciated it, as I was trying very hard not to cry, and he helped me compose myself. It was a special moment none of us will forget,” Amy said.
Neil made sure his daughter was by his side for the second try. The clip gained over 114,000 likes on TikTok, and Neil worked the funny moment right into his reception speech. “The joke I made about the guests thinking I was at the wrong wedding got a huge laugh, so everyone took it in good spirits,” he said.
