The Funkateers, a dance group of four friends from Detroit, brought tears of joy to America’s Got Talent when they earned a Golden Buzzer after dancing together for 45 years.
The Funkateers Story
The story begins in 1980 at a high school in Inkster, Michigan. Four teenage boys formed a dance group called the Funkateers. They won their school talent show with their smooth moves and infectious energy.
Their success led them to Detroit’s dance scene, where they became regular performers. They even appeared on ‘The Scene,’ a popular TV show that featured local music and dance acts.
Life pulled them in different directions as they grew older. Marriage, children, and careers took priority. One worked in sales, another in financial services, one in maintenance, and another joined Homeland Security.
Their dancing days seemed over. The last time they performed together was at one of their weddings in 1989.
But God had other plans. In 2019, the four men decided to reunite. Their bodies had aged, but their passion remained strong. When they stepped onto the America’s Got Talent stage, they told the judges about their incredible 45-year journey.
The AGT Audition
Their audition song was ‘Give It To Me Baby’ by Rick James. When the music started, these middle-aged men moved like teenagers again.
Their bodies locked and popped with perfect timing. Every step was crisp. Every move was smooth. The audience jumped to their feet.
Judge Sofia Vergara could barely contain her excitement. ‘You guys are what AGT is all about,’ she said. ‘You’re great, you have a beautiful story and you actually did what you were supposed to do. I loved it!’
Howie Mandel was equally impressed. ‘As good as they were in high school, it’s better that you did it now at this age. It makes it even better!’
Golden Buzzer Moment
Simon Cowell was ready to hit his Golden Buzzer. But host Terry Crews had the same idea. He raced from behind the judges’ table and slammed the buzzer first.
Golden confetti rained down as Crews ran onto the stage. ‘These are my people!’ he shouted while hugging each dancer.
Cowell laughed about missing his chance. ‘That was supposed to be mine!’ he said. But his joy for the group was obvious.
The Golden Buzzer sends the Funkateers straight to the live shows. They skip the public vote and head directly to the next round.
Crews made it clear why he chose them. ‘This performance proves that age ain’t nothing but a number,’ he told the crowd.
Your dreams matter to God. He planted them in your heart for a reason. Sometimes He makes us wait decades to see them bloom, but His timing is always perfect.
