There’s a lot going on in the world right now. Wars, prices going up, people losing their jobs. If you’ve been feeling a bit scared lately, you’re not the only one.
When I start to worry, I go back to the Bible. God never said life would be easy. But He did promise to be a refuge and a shield to those who trust in Him. And He says it again and again.
So here are 25 Bible verses about God’s protection, all from the New King James Version (NKJV). Read them when you’re anxious, pray them over your family, or write one down and stick it on the fridge.
Bible Verses About God as Our Refuge and Fortress
Psalm 46:1
God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble.
God isn’t somewhere far off when things go wrong. He’s right there with us. That’s what “very present” means.
Psalm 91:1-2
He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.”
Psalm 91 is probably the best-known protection chapter in the Bible. A lot of people pray it over their homes every night. It starts by telling us to stay close to God, because that’s where we’re safe.
Psalm 91:4
He shall cover you with His feathers, And under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler.
Ever seen a hen pull her chicks under her wings when something scares them? That’s how God covers and protects us.
Proverbs 18:10
The name of the LORD is a strong tower; The righteous run to it and are safe.
Back in Bible times, when enemies attacked a city, people ran to the tower. We can run to God the same way. All we have to do is call on His name.
Psalm 62:2
He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be greatly moved.
Things around us change all the time. God doesn’t. We might get shaken up a bit, but with Him as our rock, we won’t fall.
Nahum 1:7
The LORD is good, A stronghold in the day of trouble; And He knows those who trust in Him.
I love this one. God is good, and He knows the people who trust Him. He doesn’t see a crowd. He knows you.
Psalm 32:7
You are my hiding place; You shall preserve me from trouble; You shall surround me with songs of deliverance.
David wrote this psalm after he owned up to his sin. He ran to God instead of away from Him. And God became his hiding place.
Bible Verses About Protection From Danger and Enemies
Isaiah 54:17
No weapon formed against you shall prosper, And every tongue which rises against you in judgment You shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, And their righteousness is from Me, Says the LORD.
People might plan things against us or say all kinds of things about us. This verse says it won’t work in the end. God gets the last word.
Psalm 138:7
Though I walk in the midst of trouble, You will revive me; You will stretch out Your hand Against the wrath of my enemies, And Your right hand will save me.
David never said he wouldn’t have trouble. He said he’d walk right through the middle of it, and God would get him out.
Romans 8:31
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
Think about that for a minute. If God is on your side, who can really stand against you?
Psalm 118:6
The LORD is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me?
Sometimes we’re more scared of people than anything else. A boss, a bully, someone who wants to hurt us. This verse reminds us who’s bigger.
Luke 10:19
Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
Jesus said this to His followers when they came back excited from preaching in His name. As believers, we don’t need to be afraid of the devil. Jesus has given us authority over him.
2 Corinthians 4:8-9
We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed.
Paul went through a lot. He was beaten, thrown in jail and shipwrecked. Yet he could still say he wasn’t crushed or destroyed. God kept him going.
Isaiah 43:2
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, Nor shall the flame scorch you.
It says “when,” not “if.” Hard times will come. But God says He’ll be right there with us when they do.
Bible Verses About God’s Protection From Evil
2 Thessalonians 3:3
But the Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you from the evil one.
We don’t have to be strong enough to fight evil on our own. The Lord is faithful, and He’s the one guarding us.
Ephesians 6:11
Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
God has given us armor to wear. Truth, righteousness, faith, salvation and His Word. We just have to put it on every day, and pray as we go.
2 Timothy 4:18
And the Lord will deliver me from every evil work and preserve me for His heavenly kingdom. To Him be glory forever and ever. Amen!
Paul wrote this from prison, near the end of his life. Even then, he was sure God would get him safely home to heaven.
Psalm 121:7-8
The LORD shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul. The LORD shall preserve your going out and your coming in From this time forth, and even forevermore.
Heading out to work, coming home at night, and everything in between. God is watching over all of it.
Bible Verses About God’s Angels Watching Over Us
Psalm 91:11
For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways.
God sends His angels to guard and keep His people. We might never see them, but they’re there.
Psalm 34:7
The angel of the LORD encamps all around those who fear Him, And delivers them.
David wrote this after God got him out of a really dangerous spot. Picture soldiers camped all around you, keeping watch. That’s what this verse is saying.
Bible Verses About God’s Presence and Peace
Deuteronomy 31:6
Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the LORD your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.
Moses said this to the Israelites right before they went into a land full of enemies. God promised He wouldn’t leave them. He says the same thing to us.
Genesis 28:15
Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you.
Jacob was running away from home when God said this to him. He was alone and probably scared stiff. God told him He’d go with him wherever he went.
Isaiah 41:10
Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.
This is one I keep going back to when I’m anxious. God says it plainly. Don’t be afraid. I’m with you. I’ll help you.
Psalm 5:11
But let all those rejoice who put their trust in You; Let them ever shout for joy, because You defend them; Let those also who love Your name Be joyful in You.
When we trust God to defend us, we don’t have to live scared all the time. We can actually be happy.
Psalm 4:8
I will both lie down in peace, and sleep; For You alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.
If you can’t sleep because you’re worried, pray this one. God stays awake all night, so you can rest.
A Prayer for God’s Protection
Lord, thank You for being our refuge and for protecting me and my family. I’m putting all of us in Your hands. Please keep us safe from danger and from anything evil. Send Your angels to watch over us when we go out and when we come home. And when I start to get scared, help me remember that You’re right here with me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
God Is Still Our Refuge
Trusting God doesn’t mean bad things will never happen. They do, even to people who love Him. But we never have to go through them alone.
