We don’t always recognize what our police officers go through every day. They leave their loved ones behind and put their lives on the line to protect our communities.

We see them directing traffic, responding to emergencies, and helping stranded drivers. But how often do we get a chance to give back?

In Lubbock, a group of Good Samaritans got exactly that chance and didn’t hesitate to act.

Two Lubbock County deputies were helping a stranded driver on Thursday morning when disaster struck. They had stepped out of their patrol cars to assist someone who needed help. Then a semi truck slammed into one of their patrol vehicles.

The impact pinned both deputies against the guardrail of the overpass. One deputy found himself dangling over the edge, held up only by the wreckage of his own patrol car. He was seconds away from falling to his death.

People at a nearby gas station heard the crash and ran toward the scene. They grabbed ladders and rope without thinking twice about their own safety.

“I heard a crash. Someone had hit that tree there and pinned those two against the wall,” said Kohl Stephenson, one of the people who helped. “We got a ladder and just helped out as best as we can.”

The group worked together to tie rope around the deputy who was hanging over the edge. They pulled him to safety while others helped free the second deputy. Their quick actions saved lives that day.

The Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office thanked everyone who helped their deputies. Both deputies and a civilian suffered minor injuries but are expected to recover completely.
