Laudate Mennonite Ensemble performs chill-inducing a cappella rendition of the famous hymn ‘It Is Well with My Soul.’

We pass through different seasons in our lives. Sometimes we walk through sunny days and other times we face dark storms. Our strength is in knowing that God stays right beside us through every single one.
It is a comfort to see how He gives us peace even when things feel very hard.
Story Behind ‘It Is Well with My Soul’ Hymn
The song ‘It Is Well with My Soul’ was written by Horatio Spafford in 1873. He was a successful lawyer in Chicago who loved God very much.
Before he wrote the song, he lost his young son to a fever. Then he lost almost everything he owned in the Great Chicago Fire.
A few years later, he planned a trip to Europe with his wife and four daughters.
Horatio stayed behind for a few days to finish some work. He sent his wife, Anna, and their four girls ahead on a ship. While they were crossing the ocean, their ship hit another vessel and sank very fast.
All four of his daughters passed away in the cold water. Anna was found alive on a piece of wood. She sent a short message to her husband that said, “Saved alone.”
Horatio got on another ship to go find his wife. During the trip, the captain called him to the deck. He told Horatio they were passing over the exact spot where the girls had died.
Horatio went back to his room and wrote the words to this hymn. He did not write about his pain. Instead, he wrote about the peace that God gives to our souls.
The Laudate Mennonite Ensemble is a group of 16 singers from Indiana. Without any instruments, their gifted voices blend in perfect harmony and bring new life to the classic hymn.
God is our steady rock when the waves get high. We do not have to be afraid of the future. We can look at our lives and say that all is well because our Father is in control.
