Hans Schmidt, a 26-year-old father of two and a military combat veteran, serves as the outreach director at Victory Chapel First Phoenix in Arizona. His life took a dramatic turn on November 15, when a routine CT scan after an assumed assault revealed something far more sinister – a bullet lodged in his head. This discovery plunged him into a serious condition, leaving his family clinging to hope and prayer.

Zulya Schmidt, Hans’ wife recounted the evening of the shooting, describing how Hans had been street preaching, a practice he had been doing regularly for over a year. After ending his preaching session early and driving to their church, Zulya noticed Hans bleeding, initially thinking he might have been hit by a bottle. The reality, however, was much grimmer. By the time they reached the emergency room, Hans was seizing, and only then did a CT scan reveal the shocking cause of his condition.

The medical prognosis initially seemed bleak. “No neurosurgeons; it’s just not operable, and then even just hearing the detective say, ‘We’ll know more after the autopsy.'” Zulya recalled the heartbreaking moment.

The situation seemed dire, but the family’s faith never wavered. “I know God has a plan in all of this,” Zulya stated, reflecting on the peace she felt despite the chaos surrounding them. She shared her awe at Hans’ progress in her later Instagram post: “In the blink of an eye our lives were changed. You are a living miracle.”

The journey to recovery was fraught with uncertainty and fear. Zulya has been vocal about the ordeal and their unwavering faith throughout this challenging time. “We serve a miracle-working God,” she expressed in an Instagram post on Jan. 28, alongside photos and a video of Hans remarkably playing the drums, walking, and talking, just months after the incident that nearly claimed his life.

The ordeal has been challenging for the Schmidt family, especially with two young children at home. The financial and emotional toll has been substantial, leading to the creation of a GoFundMe to assist with the significant expenses incurred.

The police investigation continues in search of the person responsible for the shooting.

“God has done an incredible work in Hans’ life and every day he continues to improve,” Zulya’s wrote on Instagram. “Please continue to pray for a full restoration.”

When things seem impossible to us, remember, we serve a miracle-working God. No matter what challenges we face, let’s fully trust in His power and plan.
