A Pittsburgh police officer spent his own money to help a deaf traveler get home after he was stranded at a bus station.
God calls us to be His hands and feet in this world. When we see someone in need, we are getting an opportunity to show the love of Christ through our actions. This is the moment our faith shines bright.
Officer Steven Harris lived this truth when he met a stranger who desperately needed help.
Police got a call about an “unruly” man at a busy Greyhound station in Pittsburgh on Thursday. When Officer Harris arrived, he found something completely different.
The man wasn’t causing trouble. He was deaf and couldn’t read or speak English. He was scared and trying to get help.
The traveler had stepped off his bus to stretch his legs. Before he knew it, the bus left without him. His luggage was gone. His cash was gone. He had no way to get home to Montreal.
“Officer Keso hooked his phone up to an internet hot spot, we called the translator line, and we were able to finally boil it down to, he didn’t have any cash and needed a way out and his bags were missing,” Harris said. “They were in New York, so we got him to New York.”
Harris didn’t hesitate. He walked to the nearby Amtrak station and bought the man a $113 train ticket with his own bank card.
“I simply used my own bank card to buy the guy a ticket,” Harris explained. “We’re supposed to be good men. Good men helping other good men. That’s it.”
Harris credited his great grandmother for his kind response. “I was raised by my great grandma,” he said. “My great grandmother. So I think I was raised for a different times.”
We all can make a difference in someone’s life. God gave us our blessings not just for ourselves, but also to help and care for people in need.
Like this officer, let us all have a heart to stop and listen to those around us who are in desperate situations.
