A compassionate woman rescued two orphaned baby squirrels after local tree trimmers destroyed their nest in South Carolina. One hand raised wild squirrel now returns to her front porch every single morning to visit his human family for snuggles.
Danielle Leighton signed up to volunteer with a local wildlife rehab group called Nutty by Nature in South Carolina. Soon after joining she received an urgent call about two helpless infant squirrels.
A commercial tree trimming company had chopped down the tree holding their nest leaving the tiny animals completely stranded. They were barely two inches long, completely hairless, blind, and deaf. Danielle placed them in a plastic tub over a warm blanket inside her home.
Danielle and her three young children stepped in to provide round the clock care. The family fed the fragile siblings special formula every two to three hours day and night. They weighed the babies every day to calculate the exact feeding amounts using strict math formulas.
As the squirrels grew fur and opened their eyes, they bonded closely with the family. They began snuggling in hands and hiding inside her son’s hoodie pockets.
Eventually the family moved the squirrels to a large outdoor enclosure to help them adjust to nature. They installed a special squirrel box high up in a backyard tree. and the two siblings still sleep together there every night for safety. The squirrels were released back into the wild nearly a year ago to live as free animals in the woods.
But one of them, a squirrel named Ridge, can’t forget his human family who cared for them. Every morning he shows up on the front porch, hops onto the rocking chairs, and stares through the glass door like he’s waiting for someone to notice him. And someone always does. Danielle or one of her children steps outside, and Ridge climbs right up onto their shoulders for a few gentle kisses. Then he disappears back into the trees.
It’s just amazing to see the emotional bond God wove into His creatures regardless of their species. Squirrels, dogs, elephants, even birds. Many animals can remember the people who showed them kindness and show pure affection in return.
Interesting Facts: A single squirrel can bury thousands of nuts across a season and still remember almost exactly where each one is hidden. It uses landmarks like rocks, trees, and even the angle of the sun to find its way back months later. Some squirrels will even pretend to bury a nut when they know another animal is watching, just to protect their real hiding spot from thieves.
