Mom Teaches 5-Year-Old a Powerful Lesson Before Kindergarten Begins

A mother in Western Michigan has a heart-to-heart conversation with her five-year-old daughter about treating others with respect.

Every day we hear stories of hate and division on the news. Children bully others at school. Adults argue and fight over differences. But the root cause of these problems often starts at home.

Many parents get busy with their schedules and leave their children to figure things out on their own. Children receive what they hear and see around them without knowing whether it’s right or wrong.

As parents, we miss opportunities that may never come back to instill good values in them and to guide them in the right way. Here a mother shows us an example of good parenting by teaching her daughter an important lesson.

Tara Cochran knew her daughter Evy needed to learn about kindness before starting school. She asked Evy to put on her “listening ears” for their special conversation.

When Tara asked what differences Evy noticed about other people, her daughter simply said “some people are tan” and “some people are black.”

Tara smiled and told Evy “it’s really cool that there are so many different skin tones out there.” She asked if skin color was something to make fun of people about. Evy quickly said “No.” Her mom agreed, saying “making fun of people is not nice.”

Tara continued teaching her daughter important lessons. She explained “it is never okay to make fun of somebody for their skin color, their height. Some people are skinny, some people are bigger. The cool thing about being a human is that we’re all different.”

This conversation meant everything to Tara. She grew up in what she calls “a very toxic and abusive home.” Now as a mother, she works hard to “break the cycle” with her own children. She wants Evy to learn love and respect from the start.

Tara decided to share their talk online to help other parents have similar conversations with their children.

It is in our homes that our children first learn about love and acceptance. When we take time to teach them moral values, we are building a foundation for them to grow into better human beings and help make the world a kinder place.
