A young man became a guardian angel for an elderly couple after rescuing them from a car wreck on a busy highway.
Juan Mendoza is only 19 years old. He was driving with his girlfriend through southern Texas on a rainy Wednesday when he saw a car spinning out of control. It had been hit and was sitting right in the middle of the highway.
Most people would keep driving but Juan didn’t even think twice. He jumped out of his car and ran toward the smoking wreck.
Inside the car were Juan and Adriana O’Matta. Mr. O’Matta is turning 80 this month and they were just trying to get home from a doctor’s appointment. They were stuck and scared.
Juan O’Matta later said that nobody else stopped for them. Mendoza was the only one. He started pulling debris away and worked to get them out of the vehicle before things got worse.
Adriana calls him her angel because he showed up at the exact right moment.
“He was there at the right moment that we needed him, so that’s why I say he was my angel.”
The couple didn’t even get his name at the scene. They really wanted to thank him so a reporter helped set up a meeting at the Texas Roadhouse where Mendoza works as a cook. It was a beautiful reunion with a lot of tears.
While they were there the president of Acadian Ambulance Service showed up too. He saw something special in Juan. He offered the teenager a full scholarship to become an EMT and a job once he finishes school. Even the mayor of Weslaco came by to declare a special day in his honor.
Juan stays very humble about the whole thing. He says his parents taught him to help anyone who needs it. It’s a blessing to see how God uses one person to answer the prayers of another.
