On March 1, 2024, Sydney Thomas, a 26-year-old truck driver, had an experience that changed her life forever.
In those terrifying moments, Sydney thought, “This is it,” believing she was about to die.
Sydney remembered thinking, “When I went through the railing, I was like, ‘Wow, this is a crazy way to die.’”
Despite her fear, she stayed calm throughout the terrifying situation.

Throughout the ordeal, Sydney found strength in prayer. She later said, “Sometimes you pray, and I’m guilty of this: I pray, and I don’t think God is listening. But He was that day.”
Firefighter Bryce Carden played a critical role in rescuing Sydney. He rappelled down to her truck, prayed with her, and helped her stay calm. “She was praying a lot and I prayed with her,” Bryce said.
His faith and bravery were key to the rescue. He secured Sydney in a harness, and she was lifted to safety after hanging over the river for nearly 40 minutes.
Sydney’s father, Marc Thomas, a truck driver himself, was deeply grateful and believed that God saved his daughter.
He said, “That rescue was nothing but God displaying Himself to me.”
This experience had a profound impact on Sydney. She now believes that her survival has a purpose.
“God has me here for a reason and I have to fulfill my purpose in life,” she said. She refuses to let fear control her life because she believes God saved her for a reason.
The Bible tells us in Psalm 46:1, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”
This verse reassures us that no matter what challenges we face, God is always there, ready to provide us with the strength and protection we need.
Just as He watches over the sparrows, He watches over us, ensuring that nothing happens outside of His sovereign will.
In times of crisis, it is natural to feel afraid and helpless. However, these are also the times when our faith can grow the strongest.
When we pray and call out to God, we can trust that He hears us. As Sydney Thomas shared in her experience, “Sometimes you pray, and I’m guilty of this: I pray, and I don’t think God is listening. But He was that day.”
This is a powerful reminder that God is always listening, even when we doubt.
