Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson gave all the glory to Jesus Christ right after his team beat Georgia on Saturday night.
Most people credit their achievements to their hard work or to the people who supported them. But when we walk with God, we remember that every good thing comes from Him. That’s the kind of faith Ty Simpson showed on national TV.
Simpson Puts Jesus First
Alabama beat Georgia 24-21 at Sanford Stadium on Saturday. The win ended Georgia’s 33 game home winning streak.
When ESPN reporter Holly Rowe asked Simpson how his team pulled off the victory, he didn’t start with himself.
“Man, first off — I just want to thank the Lord. You know, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ,” Simpson said. “I wouldn’t be here. You know, He gave us the opportunity and blessing to play today.”
Simpson then praised his teammates. He told them before the game that it was Alabama against the world. He said when they walked out, they were gladiators and the stadium was the coliseum. His teammates played that way.
Rowe asked him how he stayed calm in such a loud, intense place. His answer was simple.
“Like I said — my Lord and Savior,” Simpson replied.
This wasn’t just game-day talk. He’s been saying the same thing all season.
Before the Georgia game, coach Kirby Smart even called him “probably the hottest quarterback right now in all of college football.”
Simpson has thrown nine touchdowns without a single interception. He completed 41 of 46 passes in his two games before Georgia.
But Simpson doesn’t let numbers define him. After beating Wisconsin, he explained his real source of confidence.
“First off, I get my confidence from the Lord,” he said. “I pray before every game. I pray every morning before I go into the building — to thank the Lord for giving me this opportunity to play at the University of Alabama, but also to give me wisdom and strength and just make sure I do everything the way He wants me to do it.”
Faith Tested After a Tough Scrimmage
His faith has been tested along the way. During his sophomore year, he had a bad scrimmage. He cried and told someone football didn’t feel fun anymore. His father, Jason Simpson, asked him a simple question: How’s your faith?
That question changed him. He realized he cared too much about what people thought of his skills. He wasn’t focused enough on God.
“I’m like, ‘I’m going to pray,’” Simpson said. “‘I’m going to give everything I’ve got to the Lord and make sure I understand that I’m just going to be the best player, the best Ty Simpson I can be.’”
Simpson Finds His Strength in Prayer
He finds strength in Micah 5:5, which points to Christ as our peace. He prays before every game and every morning before practice. He thanks God for the opportunity to play and asks for wisdom and strength.
Simpson grew up watching his father coach at the University of Tennessee at Martin. He saw his dad remind players to be Christians first. He also admired Tim Tebow, another quarterback who shared his faith boldly.
“I loved the way he played, how passionate he was, and how outspoken he was about his faith,” Simpson said.
“I thought that was really cool, and it’s something that I want to be now that I’m on this platform. I want people to know I’m a Christian first and then I’m a football player. I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”
Simpson made his priorities clear after another game this season.
‘I’m a Christian first’
“No matter how many touchdowns I throw, no matter how many wins I have at the University of Alabama, I’m a Christian first,” he said.
Millions of people heard Simpson speak after the Georgia game. He could have talked about his arm or his game plan. Instead, he pointed to Jesus. Not once, but twice.
Using Your Chances to Lift Jesus’ Name
When God gives us a platform, big or small, we have a choice. We can use it for our glory, or we can give it to Him.
Ty Simpson chose Jesus. He showed what it means to be unashamed of the Gospel. He reminded us that our worth isn’t in what we do but in whose we are.
May we be as bold. When people ask us how we made it through, may our first words always be about our Lord and Savior. That kind of faith can change hearts and point people to heaven.
