A Detroit man’s selfless act of kindness to a stranger led to a life-changing surprise.
Sometimes we find ourselves with nothing left in our bank account. We struggle to pay our bills or make ends meet. The electricity might get shut off, and we count every dollar just to get by.
But here’s what’s amazing about God. He watches how we treat others when we’re at our lowest point. He notices when we choose to help someone else even though we can barely help ourselves.
That’s exactly what happened to Curtis Dixon. His electricity had been turned off the day before, and he was walking into American Jewelry and Loan in Detroit.
Curtis planned to pawn his wedding ring just to pay his utility bill. That’s when everything changed.
A man outside the store asked Curtis for help. The man appeared to be blind and needed someone to help him stand up.
“Could you help me stand up?” the man asked. Curtis didn’t hesitate. He helped the stranger to his feet.
Then the man asked Curtis if he could spare a few dollars. Most people would have said no. Curtis was about to pawn his wedding ring just to keep his lights on. But Curtis had a different answer.
“I’ll have a couple bucks when I come out here. I’m going to pawn my wedding ring man,” Curtis told him. “My lights were shut off yesterday. Yeah I’ll give you a couple bucks.”
What Curtis didn’t know was huge. The man wasn’t really blind. His name was Zach Dereniowski, and he goes by MDMotivator online.
Zach has millions of followers and does special charity work. He was testing people to see who would help a stranger in need.
When Curtis came back out of the pawn shop, Zach revealed the truth. “He tells me he’s not blind,” Curtis told FOX 2 later. “I’m like ‘woah.’ I’m testing him, how many fingers? He says two, after that, my life just changed.”
The surprises started right away. First, Zach paid to get Curtis’s lights turned back on. Then he gave Curtis $5,000.
American Jewelry and Loan added another $2,500. They gave Curtis a new car. But the biggest shock was still coming.
People from around the world had heard Curtis’s story. They raised more than $100,000 for him. Curtis could hardly believe it.
“We need more people like Curtis,” Zach said. “Everyone can do these small acts because the small acts are what matters. That’s where all this money came from. Everyone that had a small amount to give wanted to give to you because they felt your heart.”
Curtis had a simple explanation for his actions. When people asked him why he helped, he always gave the same answer.
“Because God told me to help you. First and foremost. I would do it for you, I would do it for anybody else.” Curtis said.
Curtis had almost nothing, but he was ready to share what little he had. God took that generous heart and blessed it beyond anything Curtis could have dreamed.
Let us remember that God notices every simple thing we do for others. When we put others first, even in our struggles, He opens new doors for us in ways we could never imagine.
