An 8-year-old Colorado girl kept her cool and called 911 when her father had a seizure, saving his life.
We often wonder how we would react in an emergency. Would we panic or freeze up? Would we remember what to do?
God gives us strength when we need it most, even when we are just children.
The Emergency Strikes
Adriana Wailes was home alone with her dad John on June 1 when everything changed in seconds.
John, a military veteran fighting brain cancer, suddenly started having a seizure and stopped responding. For any child, this would be absolutely terrifying.
A Young Girl’s Brave Response
But Adriana did something amazing. She used Siri to call 911 and spoke to the dispatcher with a calmness that shocked everyone who heard the call.
“Dad just started shaking, and I got really, really worried,” Adriana told dispatcher Steve Smith.
Her voice was shaky, but she stayed focused. She gave her name and address clearly. She even helped track her father’s breathing when the dispatcher asked.
The Dispatcher Was Amazed
Steve Smith has taken thousands of emergency calls, but this one stood out. “This call was exceptional,” he said. “I’ve never had a call where an 8-year-old was so calm, and her demeanor was so, just, level headed. It was amazing.”
A Father’s Day Miracle
First responders rushed to their home in Centennial, Colorado. They got John to the hospital quickly.
Doctors treated him and sent him home the same day. The family got their Father’s Day miracle.
A Father’s Pride
John and his wife both served as military police officers. He also worked as a Department of Defense firefighter. Seeing his daughter handle this crisis filled him with pride and emotion.
“To know that we are raising our daughters so that they can respond appropriately, and that they can handle a situation that I’m sure is extremely scary for an 8-year-old, and do such a wonderful job, means so much to me as a father,” John said, his voice breaking.
Adriana’s mother had taught her what to do during medical emergencies. That preparation made all the difference when it mattered most.
Teaching Our Children to Respond
This story shows how important it is to teach our children what to do in medical emergencies. They should at least know how to call 911, and if they are old enough, they should receive CPR training.
Even when we prepare them well, they still need God’s strength to act promptly in such crucial situations.
We thank God for preparing this young girl to save her father’s life.
Let us remember to pray for John’s full recovery from his battle with brain cancer.
