A Catholic nun surprised everyone at a school gala when she took the stage and rocked out to a Bob Seger classic alongside world-famous musicians.

When most of us think of a nun we think of someone quiet, gentle and deeply devoted to prayer and service. The last place we’d expect to see one is on a rock and roll stage with a microphone. But Sister Bernadette had other plans that night.
Sister Bernadette was the surprise performer at Wayside Academy’s 30th Anniversary Gala and nobody saw it coming.
The evening started quietly enough. She walked on stage with the musicians and everything looked like a slow, peaceful number was about to begin. The piano played softly. Then it shifted into rock and roll and the whole room changed.
She sang Bob Seger’s ‘Old Time Rock & Roll’ with everything she had. She danced, she clapped and she fed off the energy of the crowd.
Standing right there with her were world-famous fiddlers Natalie MacMaster and Donnell Leahy along with their family and The Weber Brothers. The audience jumped to their feet.
What started as a surprise turned into the highlight of the whole evening. The organizers put it simply when they said the night was a reminder “that joy is an essential part of the Christian life.” That says it all.
So we don’t have to be stiff or serious all the time to honor God. Joy is part of the deal too. Sister Bernadette showed us that faith can be joyful, expressive, and full of life. And it was a reminder we all needed.
