An elderly woman surprised a young street performer in Nashville by joining him for a bucket drum battle that went viral on social media. Their incredible jam session captivated thousands on the sidewalk and proved that musical talent knows no age.

When I saw this clip of street musician James drumming alongside internet sensation Dorothea Taylor I could not help but smile.
Dorothea who many people call the Godmother of Drumming sat right down next to James on upside down plastic paint buckets. She took out her drumsticks and matched his rapid rhythms beat for beat on a busy street.
So how did this unexpected performance happen in the first place? Dorothea grew up in Michigan and started drumming at age thirteen in a local drum corps before spending over forty years teaching students and playing church organs.
James was playing his bucket drums for people walking past when Dorothea stopped by to join in. She loves stepping into public spaces to show everyone that older musicians still have incredible skill and energy.
They took turns playing fast drum rolls and lightning quick stick tricks on cheap plastic buckets. James pointed at her in total amazement as she kept up with every single beat he played.
The spontaneous video racked up millions of views online and earned them a featured spot on Good Morning America.
What amazes me more than their performance is Dorothea’s attitude. She is 75 years old, but she didn’t let that stop her from doing what she loves and sharing the skills she learned over decades with others.
Like Dorothea, we should never let age be an excuse to sit on the sidelines, but rather an inspiration to use our skills and step into every opportunity God brings.
Just look at that young boy’s reaction to her performance. We too can bring that same joy to the people around us if we decide to set aside our small excuses.
